cinesat program

Performs all image processing functions by means of a command language. It is invoked from

  • the Unix command line
  • shell scripts or
  • your own programs by system calls
APE Facility

The Automatic Product Extraction is a flexible framework to operationally generate your real-time weather products. Its product extraction chains utilize standard Unix scripts and calls to the cinesat program (or to your own programs) to realize all required functionality.

  • operation and monitoring from command line
  • runs user-configurable processing chains which may include calls to your own programs
  • optionally calls your utilities for data import and export (data transfer and conversion)
  • invocation from your programs by system calls
CineSat GUI

The graphical user interface supports the

  • menu-driven configuration, operation and monitoring of APE
  • includes a powerful file viewer

  The Menu-Driven Graphical User Interface

CineSat combines its very flexible and operationally proofen Unix script interface with a fully featured graphical user interface. The new Java menu supports configuration, operation, and monitoring of CineSat's Automatic Product Extraction (APE).
As a special feature, it includes a 'universal' image browser for most standard and for user specific image formats.

Features:

  • Configuration of Automatic Product Extraction (APE): data import, result distribution, product extraction parameters, ...
  • APE operation: start, stop, restart (after reconfiguration), processing of archived test cases
  • APE monitoring: status, log files, processes, disk space
  • Multi-window browser for all CineSat image, log, and configuration files
  • Image display: PNG, RAS, PBM, PGM, PPM, BMP, GIF, JPG, PIF, XPIF, OpenMTP, and interfaced site images
  • Browse additional image formats by configuring standard conversion tools
  • Image pan and overview zoom
  • Standard window layouts: full window, cascaded, side-by-side, top-to-bottom, tiled, tabbed
  • English and German menu language support (other languages on request)
  • Switchable look-and-feel (Motif, Windows, Metal, CineSat)
  • Based on latest Java software technologies

You will appreciate CineSat's new image browser as a valuable tool to efficiently view any image directories on your computer.

Top If you need to combine CineSat's analysis and forecast results with other meteorological data, like numerical weather prediction models, vertical profiles, and alpha-numeric bulletins, we can offer you the fully featured METLAB forecast workstation to complete your meteo facilities.

The HTML-Based Monitor and Result Browser

CineSat comes with a JavaScript-based facility to monitor the Automatic Product Extraction and view its results with a standard web browser. In particular, you can

  • display real-time CineSat result images and weather products
  • monitor the APE system status
  • view all log files
  • browse the APE configuration, and
  • access the electronic system documentation

This facility allows you to remotely monitor APE and to publish CineSat weather displays in your intranet.

  The Command Line Interface

CineSat supports a very flexible command line interface at two levels:

  • for all image processing functions of the core cinesat program, and
  • for the operation and monitoring of the Automatic Product Extraction facility (APE)

This allows you to invoke all CineSat functions from a Unix terminal, your Unix shell scripts, and from your own programs.

    APE command line interface

The Automatic Product Extraction can be operated and controlled by the ape shell script. It supports

  • APE start
  • stop
  • restart (after configuration change)
  • processing of offline test cases
  • monitoring disk, process, and log status
  • clearing of the APE work space, and
  • performing a diagnostic system snapshot

This interface is recommended for remote operation of the Automatic Product Extraction facility and to integrate APE administration into your own graphical user interfaces. For local APE administration, you may prefer CineSat's menu interface.

    cinesat command line interface

The core program "cinesat" performs all image processing functions by means of an easy command language.

Example CineSat commands as being typed on a Unix command line:

If you want to compute the atmospheric motion field between the 10:00 and 10:30 infra-red images, you type:

% cinesat amf1030 = amf ir1000 ir1030

You can now use this motion field (and its predecessors) to e.g. predict the next 4 images (at 30 minute time steps):

% cinesat nowcast ir1030 amf1030 /Steps=4 /TStep=30

This command will produce the four predicted images ir1030.030, ir1030.060, ir1030.090, and ir1030.120.

Top Complex processing steps can be configured by simply invoking the cinesat program several times with successive commands.

This interface is recommended for on-the-fly image processing from the Unix command line or from your shell scripts and to integrate CineSat's image processing capabilities into your own applications.

  Invoking Your Applications from CineSat

  Top

If you want to replace or extend some of CineSat's functionality by your own tools and applications, the Automatic Product Extraction facility can call your specific

  • data transfer and data distribution utilities
  • file format converters
  • image filters (like an atmospheric correction program), and
  • any of your applications that further processes CineSat's intermediate or final results

With these interfaces, CineSat lets you take full advantage of its unique analysis and forecast products, while still using your existing software for specific processing steps. This way, you can e.g. easily integrate CineSat with the Satellite Application Facilities (data and software) that will become available with Meteosat 2nd Generation.

  Invoking CineSat from Your Applications

Top In addition to its convenient graphical menu, CineSat offers you an easy to use Unix command line interface. This allows you to call all CineSat functions from your own programs and user interfaces, e.g. image filtering and projecting, image analysis and forecasting, or even starting up and shutting down the real-time Automatic Product Extraction facility.
